Introduction to Abstract Acrylic Painting

75.00

Inspired by Hilma af Klint with Sarah C.B. Guthrie, MFA

Thursday, October 3, 6-8pm

Led by professional artist and artist coach, Sarah C.B. Guthrie, MFA (pictured here with af Klint’s artwork), this course will take you through some basics of mixing colors--including Hilma's gorgeous palette of neutrals--and get you comfortable using different brushes and markers to make oodles of doodles and shapes. Participants will have fun getting comfortable with these tools and paints and then create their own version of a painting in the style of Hilma af Klint.

Sarah's introduction to abstract acrylic painting classes are inspired by artists who are underrepresented in museums, catalogs, and art history books, but who, more recently, are gaining attention and changing the art world. Working with fun, easy to clean and use acrylic paint, participants will get a little insight into art history and painting processes while learning some of the basics of abstract painting.

Who was Hilma af Klint? An abstract painter born in Sweden in 1862, she was painting abstracts--including large scale paintings--before Kandinsky, who is frequently credited as being the first abstract painter. Hilma's work brings in visual elements of mysticism, science, and mathematics to create gorgeous, playful, and meaningful paintings. Instructor Sarah was lucky enough to see her exhibit at the Guggenheim earlier this year and shared, "To find out that the first abstract artist was a woman--and not Kandinsky--changes the contemporary art history books and all the stories we've heard--and was profoundly meaningful to me as an artist."

This workshop is for beginners or experienced artists--anyone interested in learning more about acrylic abstract painting or play with af Klint's approach to painting.
